reMarkable

Write notes by hand, keep them organised and bring useful ideas back to your computer.

An independent AAT Solutions guide.

Last reviewed: 5 November 2026 · Applies to: reMarkable paper tablets and companion apps; differences are noted below.

Checked against official documentation. Menus and features can vary with your model, software version and subscription. Use the linked manufacturer help if your screen differs.

Before you start

reMarkable is a digital notebook for handwriting and reading. A useful first goal is to take one meeting note, find it again and export a copy. You do not need to learn every feature at once.

  • reMarkable 2 and Paper Pure: monochrome screens without a built-in reading light.
  • Paper Pro and Paper Pro Move: colour screens with an adjustable reading light; Move is the smaller model.
  • Check your Marker: reMarkable 2 uses different Markers from Paper Pro, Paper Pro Move and Paper Pure. The newer models’ Markers charge when attached to the tablet. Marker Plus adds an eraser at the opposite end.

Screen landmarks: My files is your library. The menu is at the upper left. Open a notebook to see its page and writing toolbar. The toolbar can be moved, so do not assume it is always on the left. Some controls sit inside Document settings, depending on its position.

Set up in five steps

  1. Prepare your tablet. Charge it, turn it on and follow its setup screens. Choose your language and writing hand. On a work device, check your organisation’s rules before connecting accounts or uploading documents.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi. Use the setup prompt, or open Menu → Settings → Wi-Fi. An internet connection is needed for syncing, handwriting conversion and sharing.
  3. Pair your account. On your computer, open my.remarkable.com (opens in a new tab). Sign in or create an account, then choose Pair your device. Enter the displayed one-time code on the tablet and continue. Pairing and subscribing to Connect are separate decisions; you do not need to start a paid subscription for the basics below.
  4. Create a practice notebook. In My files, tap the plus button, then Notebook. Type Practice notes and tap Create. Older layouts may show a Notebook button directly.
  5. Connect your computer. Install the official desktop app from Devices and apps (opens in a new tab). Open it, select Log in, obtain the code in your browser and enter it in the app, then choose Pair the app. Alternatively, sign in at app.remarkable.com (opens in a new tab) in your browser. Check that your practice notebook appears after syncing.

Everyday tasks

Write, correct and add a page

Why: keep your attention on the idea, with room to tidy it afterwards.

  1. Open Practice notes. Tap the writing-tool icon in the toolbar, choose a pen and stroke thickness, then write a short sentence with the Marker.
  2. Tap Eraser to remove a stroke, or Undo to reverse your last action. Use Redo if you change your mind.
  3. Tap Add page. To see all pages, open Page overview, shown by four squares; it may be inside Document settings.
  4. For ruled paper, choose Layers → Template and select a lined layout. Templates apply to notebooks, not imported PDFs.

Create folders and useful tags

Why: folders group whole documents; tags help you find related information across them.

  1. From My files, tap plus → Folder. Name it Work, then tap Create.
  2. Long-press your practice notebook, choose Move, open Work and choose Move here.
  3. To tag a particular page, open it and choose Document settings → Tags → New tag. Enter Follow up, then create it. To tag a whole file, long-press it in My files and choose More → Tag.
  4. Open Menu → Tags and select Follow up to find the tagged content. A page tag and a whole-file tag are different.

Import, annotate and export a PDF

Why: read and mark a document on the tablet, then keep or send a copy with your notes.

  1. On your computer, open the desktop app and click Import at the top. Select a practice PDF, then Open. You can also drag the PDF into the app window.
  2. Wait for it to sync, then tap it on your tablet. Choose a pen or highlighter and add a note. This annotates the document; it does not edit the original PDF wording.
  3. Pinch with two fingers to zoom out, or spread them to zoom in. Use two fingers to move around the zoomed page.
  4. After syncing, select the file in the desktop app. Right-click, or open its options menu, and choose Export as PDF. Choose where to save it, then open the exported copy to check your notes.

No desktop app? In the web app, select browse your files to import a PDF. Standard PDF import and Connect’s Convert to Notebook are different features. The web upload limit is 100 MB.

Turn handwriting into typed text

Why: reuse a handwritten note without typing it all again.

  1. Connect the tablet to Wi-Fi and check it is paired to your account. Start with a handwritten page in your practice notebook.
  2. Choose Document settings → Convert to text. This creates a new typed page and preserves the original handwriting.
  3. Read the result and correct names, numbers and punctuation using the on-screen keyboard. Do not assume diagrams or mathematical notation will convert.
  4. If recognition is poor, check Menu → Settings → Language and keyboard → Handwriting conversion. Choose the language you wrote in, such as English (United Kingdom).

The selection tool also offers conversion, but it replaces the selected handwriting on the same page. Use the Document settings method first when you want to keep both versions.

What needs Connect?

Without Connect: you can write on the tablet, organise with tags, convert handwriting on the tablet, email documents and use Screen Share. Cloud syncing is limited: files not opened and synced for more than 50 days stop updating in the companion apps. Your notes remain on the tablet.

With Connect: benefits include unlimited cloud storage, typing and editing in the companion apps, handwriting search and supported document conversion into editable notebooks. For example, the web app’s Convert to Notebook can handle supported PDF and Word DOCX files.

Keep a useful copy: export important finished work to your usual document storage. Syncing is convenient, but changing or deleting a file can affect its other synced copies.

Check the current plan in your own account before starting a trial. Prices and included features can change.

Show your notes in a Teams session

Why: a trainer or colleague can follow your writing without looking over your shoulder.

  1. Open the paired desktop app on your computer and a practice notebook on the tablet.
  2. On the tablet, choose Share → Present with Screen Share. If Share is not visible, open the three-dot / Document settings menu first.
  3. Accept the Screen Share invitation in the desktop app. Your page appears in a computer window.
  4. In Teams, share that window so the other person can see it. Finish by stopping Screen Share on the tablet and stopping sharing in Teams.

Screen Share displays document content, not the My files library. It cannot show every setup menu to your trainer. The web app also supports Screen Share with tablet software 3.27 or later. A restricted workplace network can block the connection.

Common problems, and what to do

  • The file has not appeared. Check the tablet’s Wi-Fi, the computer’s connection and that both use the same reMarkable account. Allow syncing to finish. For an older file, check the 50-day limit above before assuming it is lost.
  • The toolbar is missing or different. Tap its show/hide control. Toolbar position is adjustable under Settings → Accessibility; some tools move into Document settings. Software updates can also move controls.
  • I cannot edit in the desktop app. Typing and editing there require Connect. Without it, you can still view synced documents and export pages.
  • The desktop app will not install. reMarkable does not currently support Windows ARM computers in its desktop app. Use the web app where suitable; ask your IT team about installation on a managed computer.
  • Writing is uncomfortable. Try the handedness and toolbar-position settings, a different stroke width and a suitable page view. If you need a screen reader, check whether the tablet and companion apps support your required tasks before buying. Handedness and toolbar settings do not provide speech navigation.

Try it yourself

  1. Create a notebook called Weekly meeting and write three sample actions.
  2. Correct one action with Undo, then add a second page.
  3. Move the notebook into Work and tag the first page Follow up.
  4. Convert a short passage using Document settings. Check it against the original.
  5. Export a PDF and find it on your computer. Explain how you would find the notebook again next week.
